Sorry to dampen the mood here but rumours circulating at the moment offaly minor hurlers are will off the make this year apparently. With the u16s and 15s struggling too in results

Strange how it can change so much in a year.

Yeah, unfortunately next 5 years will be fairly sobering at minor level. Not helped by a lack of organisation and proper planning. Recent challenge matches have been tough going in particular the " challenge " vs Galway.

Has it changed much in a year? Most people are of the view that last year's U17s are very much an outlier and that the groups following them have their work cut out. Stopping for Covid also meant they had less chance to make up ground.

Suppose when you see the more traditional clubs like Birr etc not producing much it doesn’t augur well for the county teams unfortunately.

I heard that other counties were still doing work with their development squads during the Covid layoff.

Then we are back to proper organisation and planning. All counties could've been doing work. Offaly could've benn doing work and Id say they were also. It was known as far back as July there would be a new minor mgt team. One wasn't in place till December. Most counties were back in training, trials etc from early October. Offaly went back I think as a minor squad in January. There is no succession plan. As of now they don't know whose the manager for 2024. This needs to be all done within the development squad structure. Doesn't help also that some players not playing because of breach of offaly code of conduct which is totally inappropriate for children

Well there is no doubt the traditonal clubs are not at the level they once were but most of these clubs are now malgamated with other clubs so that would indicate the demographic is much less than before.

SBK
DSK
Lusmagh Kinnitty
CRCC

In relation to Birr apart from last year and potentially this year they always have 2 or 3 on Offaly minor teams but hurling is facing various challenges within the town and I dont think they have been able to put the finger on it just yet. They are making progress but its slower than they liked.

In relation to St.Rynaghs what are the challenges they face? I am not sure.
They would be all the "South" Offaly clubs who are traditonal seen as kk claim to be north Offaly

Demographics people not as many lads being born
Especially last 20 years .
Smaller population is hit even worse by this .
Another issue is awful primary school PE etc .
Years ago a young lad going to school brought his hurl with him
Today there carrying an extra couple of kilos !
It's society
