Intermediate Team

Post by Greenwhiteandgold »

Now that offaly are out of the hurling champ. Is there any potential for offaly to run a second team next season. It would be a good way of bringing lads into the senior panel and getting them up to the required physical standards. Kildare's Junior football feeds directly into their senior panel and it works very well. It would be a good opportunity for Intermediate and junior club hurlers to show themselves also.

Sounds good in theory, but won't happen for a couple of reasons.

1. Finance. Money is not there to fund it. You mention kildare and their junior football team. The kildare CB are broke, and it won't be long before the axe falls on their spending on the Junior footballers.

2. Playing Resources. Offaly would be permitted to play senior club players, which would put pressure on some clubs who have players on senior/u21/minor panels. In bigger counies such as Cork and Galway panelsare drawn from a vast number of clubs. It would not be practical to play only players from junior and intermediate clubs as they would be blown away.

I believe we need to focus in on physically developing our players to compete between the ages of 16 - 20 so as to be ready to step up to the senior team

we used to have a good junior side years ago its a pity as you could pick up a few that would make the seniors after
kilkenny down through the years have brough in one or two from their junior side.
