I’m trying to get a rough idea of what Coolderry’s population actually is. I am looking at the last census (on the CSO site) and a map of Offaly with what I think are called ‘civil parishes’. Civil parishes are different to Catholic parishes on which GAA boundaries are generally based. Each civil parish has its own box at election time.

By the looks of the map, Coolderry is made up of the civil parishes of Kilcolman, Ettagh and Aghancon. These have populations of 380, 490 and 374 respectively.

Gorteen (pop. 359) looks to be where Killavilla should be, but is some of this in Coolderry? Then there’s Dromoyle (pop. 327), which is between Birr/Crinkill and Clareen. The southern part of this may be in Coolderry. Ballincor (pop 160) seems to me to be the northern part of Shinrone though I could be wrong.

Either way, Coolderry seems to have a population of just over 1,200, and maybe have another couple of hundred if the catchment area includes parts of the other three areas.

Can anyone with local knowledge of South Offaly shed any light on this? Apologies I can’t find a link that map which I have previously printed off and which I found on the document when the General Election boundaries were being discussed.

Edit: I had another look - it's not the map I was looking for but pages 30 and 31 might give some indication of the general area.

POTH i tink both ballincor @ gorteen are both outside the parish area as regards players from there been able/allowed hurl for Coolderry if thats what ur post is asking. I tink the population ic closer to 1000 than 1200. il do some research over the weekend and let you know. Busy at the mo with "our big local derby" upcoming

I found this map elsewhere on this message board which might help - thanks to a poster named Rhoderunner.

As I drove between Birr and Roscrea last Sunday I was struck by how few Coolderry flags were flying from the houses along the road. Now I see that quite a bit of that road is actually in Shinrone! There was ne'er a green and white flag flying from The Mill House!
