Some deck shuffling?

Post by Kevin »

Saw the below in Hoganstand this AM.

Any comments on it? I remember Brown and Cordial were good, but they have been away for a while now.

Stephen Brown and Michael Cordial have been given the chance to revive their inter-county careers by Offaly hurling boss Joe Dooley.

Dooley has added the pair to his squad ahead of the Leinster SHC quarter-final clash with Antrim on May 30. Brown's Birr team-mate Mark Quinlan and the Seir Kieran duo James Mulrooney and Dermot Mooney have also been drafted in as injury continues to sideline Ger Healion (broken finger), Daniel Currams (broken thumb) and Brendan Murphy (recovering from a back problem).
Kevin Clancey. Signed out of respect for players and all involved with Offaly.

A few thoughts.

Of the players drafted in, James Mulrooney is the only one I predicted and would agree completely with. Young and on the back of a string of impressive performance for club and college, he certainly deserves his chance

Quinlan was no doubt a gifted performer underage but has been off the scene for a number of years now. This is his first year back in the Birr senior team, two games in and lo and behold he's suddenly on the county panel. I'm told he played well in those games, no surprise there as he certainly has the ability. It just seems a bit 'quick' for my liking. In addition it's not as if the county team is short on corner backs anyway, it's the one position where cover is not an issue.

As for Brown and Cordial, strange. Both players were correctly next nor near the county teams is recent years. Out of form and lacking fitness, both were club hurlers. In addition neither set the world alight during the opening two rounds of the club championship. Steady without being stellar. The only caveat: both have bags of natural ability. Based on the underage careers, both could have been all-stars by now. Whether they are in the future is entirely up to them.

Some players, Mark Egan is just one that springs to mind, must really be wondering what they have to do to get a call up.

I think with the player's out hurt Healion and curram's Brendan Murphys lack of hurling and i think Connor Mahon is off state side
joe has brought in four good hurler's its a pity they were not there for the league. i think Browne and Diggy still have plenty of hurling in them.

young mulrooney is one for the future and mark Quinlan is other fine hurler who was great at under age and think he was out with his back for a while.
Stephen Browne and Diggy Cordial could make a big change to offaly's forward line if they stay at it. if we could get Horan back we would have a good panel then.

is mulrrooney actually really that good at county level.?? he is exceptional at u21 level for clareen.. saw him play u21 with offaly and he didnt really stand out.. same last year in the senior championship for clareen he didnt really stand out.. even this year i was at one of their matches and he hurled okay but nothing to get excited about.. maybe he will be a good one for the future but at this moment he still hasnt really proved to us he should be in there based on this years senior championship.. im not being critical of the boy but i do think he is on the panel to soon.. i have no doubts though that if he hurls as well as he had done underage with clareen he will be on the team in a few years but not now its a bit too soon in my eyes..
