Ceist uimhir 5

Post by Plain of the Herbs »

Here's one to occupy ye're minds.

James Dempsey and Stephen Egan both made their league debuts against Waterford, but what other hurlers have been handed NHL debuts by the current managhement.

There are 19 by my calculation (including Dempsey and Egan).

Over to ye . . .

Trevor Corcoran came on as a sub against Wexford in the 2007 league.

Michael Verney also played several league games in 2007 as well as coming on against Dublin in the championship.

Leinsterman listed 22, of which 18 are correct. Gunnerman was correct with Mark Egan, so we have all 19. Over to you, Leinsterman - which four are incorrect :?:

The 19 who made their league debuts under Joe Dooley are:-

Tipperary 2008: Diarmuid Horan, Conor Mahon, Daniel Currams, Francis Kerrigan (sub).
Galway 2008: Brian Leonard, Ger Healion (sub).
Limerick 2008: Ciaran Flannery (sub), Damien Kilmartin (sub), James Gorman (sub), Stephen Wynne (sub).
Westmeath 2009: Colm Coughlan (sub), Derek Morkan (sub).
Kerry 2009: Mark Egan (sub).
Carlow 2009: Eanna Murphy (sub), Brian Coughlan (sub).
Cork 2010: Eoin Kelly.
Kilkenny 2010: Odhran Kealey (sub).
Waterford 2010: James Dempsey, Stephen Egan (sub).

Interesting point 1. That 7 of those 19 listed above were not called up this year for one reason or another (that's not counting Diarmuid Horan).

Interesting point 2. That only 6 of those were given a starting berth on their debuts. Two of those were goalkeepers.

Just for comparison I’ve had a look at the hurlers who made NHL debuts during John McIntyre’s tenure as manager. He gave 21 first starts but in contrast to Joe Dooley, 14 of those made 21 their debuts as starters.

It should also be noted that McIntyre never had to ‘do without’ the Birr contingent owing to club commitments. Each had a year in division 2.

Oh, and 8 of McIntyre’s 21 fledglings are still on the scene. The full list is:-

Derry 2005: Damien McDermott, Daniel Hoctor, Cathal Parlon (sub), Peter Healion (sub), Kevin Grogan (sub), Martin Corcoran (sub).
Westmeath 2005: Liam Bergin jnr (sub), Harry Ryan (sub).
Cork 2006: Brendan O’Meara, Paul Cleary, Joseph Bergin, Alan Egan.
Cork 2007: Conor Hernon, Michael Verney, Cathal Horan, David Kenny, Eddie Bevans, Derek Molloy, Shane Dooley, James Rigney (sub).
Wexford 2007: Trevor Corcoran.

K Brady, Currams & Molloy were the only 3 subs used against Cork, according to the paper, Hoganstand and the official Offaly GAA site. That's good enough for me.

Not 100% but I think you're right there. Appearance was very brief as a blood sub
