Interesting read.
What is the current situation with the academies?
Or should one not mention the war...

Re: Interview with Johnny Flaherty
I don’t know Flaherty but he’s always struck me as a flat-earther whose solution to the current state of Offaly hurling is more ground hurling.
His observation on Pat Carroll’s goal in the 1981 final is a good one. Ger coughlan dispossessed John Connolly in front of section S of the old Hogan (Haverty would have blew it up!) and 3 ground strokes later Pat Carroll got possession ten yards out. Had he scored it would have been a textbook move (for that time) but unfortunately Pat was dispossessed and the ball half cleared along the end line. Then Mark Corrigan ‘tapped’ the ball into his hand in John Troy style, passed to Flaherty who fed Carroll who blasted to the net off the inside of the post.
Aaah those were the days.

Pat Donegan. Signed out of respect for players and all involved with Offaly.
"Offaly's hurling is exact and abrasive: full of assurance on the ball, devoid of fumbling and slicing and sod-busting". Kevin Cashman RIP (September 1994).
